Not far from my home is a little cemetery that dates from the middle 1800s. As part of the landscape fabric, this small receiving vault was erected in 1940. These structures (also known as receiving tombs or public vaults) came into use in parts of the world such as northern Europe, northern North America, and far southern South America, where frozen ground made it difficult or impossible to dig graves during the winter months. In such areas, the receiving vault was used to temporarily store bodies until warmer weather permitted digging.

With changes in technology, they are now obsolete, but remain as architectural fabric in older burying grounds.

Ave Maria founder Tom Monaghan (owner of Domino's Pizza) is one of the world's largest collectors of American architect Frank Lloyd Wright and the Ave Maria Oratory was based on Wright's work. Monaghan drew the building's first sketches himself on a paper napkin. The architects at Cannon Design completed the design.

The facade of the church features a 70-ton, 30-foot high annunciation sculpture depicting the Archangel Gabriel's announcement to the Virgin Mary.

The sculpture was created by the Hungarian sculptor, Marton Varo. He used marble from Cave Michelangelo in Carrara, Italy.

He carved the sculpture alone, working seven days a week, and it took him three years to complete.

The 120-foot tall, $24 million building features a distinctive steel structure, which is largely exposed both internally and externally. Over 1,270 tons of fabricated structural steel was used in the project. The interior walls and ceiling were clad with over 50,000 square feet of Stromberg GRG. In March 2008, Diocese of Venice Bishop Frank Dewane dedicated the 1,100-seat church.

The frame of the oratory is unusual as it is visible both externally and internally. The structure received an architectural award

One of the interesting things about being an architectural historian is not so much style--but the little elements and paint or surfacing that have appeared over time. Paint analysis can tell us what colors a structure has been (inside and out); when and how many times it has changed character. This is the real story of a building's life!

These evolutions add texture and substance--and it becomes not only a thing of beauty but also a puzzle to be solved!

This window canopy latch is part of an 1880s cast iron-front commercial building in Penn Yann, NY. Spend some time with the textural feel of the brick and iron as it transitions and follows its mold.

The post process is RAF conversion is in Capture One 23 Pro to PSD format, with final adjustments in PS2023 (beta). A Nik Collection Silver Effects 3 filter was massaged to emulate Pan-X and the use of Selenium toner.

Although cemetery monuments may not seem like architecture, they are a form of public-built fabric for us to appreciate.
