Another from my emerging Met Museum series. The original work is by Jean-Baptiset Carpeaux, and executed in terra cotta form in 1873. It is of course, his close friend Alexander Duma. Gift of the Ford Foundation to the Met in 2023.

I was conflicted in interpreting this work. The tones of the original reddish terra cotta are spectacular. My penchant though is transmitting sculpture as a living entity--one I resisted in showing the working aesthetics of the bust. It is a cross between the reality of living image--and the tones and lines of a portrait painting. Let me know if I have captured that midpoint...
