This sign was outside our vacation cabin in the Smoky's--at the head of the driveway. In the dead of night there was no doubt they were about, and consorting with raccoons...

Not far from my home is a little cemetery that dates from the middle 1800s. As part of the landscape fabric, this small receiving vault was erected in 1940. These structures (also known as receiving tombs or public vaults) came into use in parts of the world such as northern Europe, northern North America, and far southern South America, where frozen ground made it difficult or impossible to dig graves during the winter months. In such areas, the receiving vault was used to temporarily store bodies until warmer weather permitted digging.

With changes in technology, they are now obsolete, but remain as architectural fabric in older burying grounds.

@Mark Keefer has me thinking about Memphis, TN, and some nice things there. Charlie Vergo's "Rendezvous", located in Downtown Alley--is a Memphis classic for BBQ.

This image is of the memorial at Gettysburg Battlefield to the Massachusett's 11th Voluntary Infantry. It is at the intersection of Sickles Avenue and Emmitsburg Road. Known as the "Boston Volunteers", these soldiers became hardened at Bull Run, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville. Then came Gettysburg.

This monument was erected in 1885, 22 years after their engagement in July of 1863. Members of the 53rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry supported them early into the battle, one of which was my 3X grandfather. Sadly, this monument was vandalized and broken apart in 2006. Nearly a decade later, it was restored--but two other monuments which were destroyed along with this one were not restored.

This image is after the restoration.

I cannot resist cemeteries. This image was taken in Mt. Pleasant cemetery, located near Howard, NY. Rural community burial grounds are for the most part quite modest in design and type of grave markers. But as often as not, there is something deep and personal left in tribute to someone who passed. In its own way, it is as remarkable as the grand monuments to death found in the Rural Garden cemeteries of the cities. This one marks the grave of Robert Coots, who obviously loved deer hunting. That fact is also reflected on the obverse of the marker.

The image Fuji RAF file was preprocessed in Capture One 23 with an export to monochrome as a PSD file. Several new layers were created in Photoshop for adjustment and the painting of tones.

This has not been printed yet, and I think that I will tinker with it a "wee bit" to get there!
